WLVC Member Spotlight: Katie Clunen
Meet Katie Clunen, Owner and Partner at Clunen and Oakman Clunen and Oakman Law LLP, based in Thousand Oaks.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your legal career.
I’m a family law attorney and proud Ventura County native—raised in Simi Valley and now live in Moorpark. I’ve been practicing law since 2004, and after two decades in the field, I can confidently say there’s never a dull moment in family law. Outside the courtroom, I’m a mom of three, a dedicated PTA member, and a firm believer that coffee should be its own food group. Whether I’m drafting a settlement or organizing a school silent auction, I’m all in.
What area of law do you practice, and what drew you to it?
I practice family law, which I’ve focused on since 2012. Before that, I spent several years working both for and against insurance companies, but I realized I wanted my work to have a more direct and personal impact. Family law gave me that opportunity—it allows me to help real people through real-life challenges, and that’s what drew me in. It’s not always easy, but it’s incredibly rewarding to guide clients through such pivotal moments in their lives.
What was your career journey like?
I always thought I’d spend my entire career working at a law firm—I never really imagined taking the leap to start my own practice. That all changed when my work wife, Karen Oakman, asked me to take that leap with her. It was a huge decision, and I honestly don’t think I would have done it without her encouragement and partnership. Saying yes to that opportunity completely changed the trajectory of my career, and I’m so grateful I took that chance. It’s been one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve ever made.
What do you find most rewarding about your role?
I’m passionate about helping clients navigate some of the most challenging chapters in their lives with clarity and compassion.
What advice would you give to women considering a legal career?
We absolutely need more women in the legal field—your voice, perspective, and presence matter. My advice? Don’t wait to feel “ready” or worry about fitting a certain mold. Be confident in what you bring to the table, ask questions, and seek out mentors who support and challenge you. The legal world needs more women in every role—advocates, judges, negotiators, leaders—so take up space and don’t be afraid to use your voice. You belong here.
How do you continue to grow and develop in your career?
I believe staying current and continually growing is essential in family law, where the legal landscape—and the needs of clients—are always evolving. I make a point to take a wide variety of MCLE courses, not just in family law but in related areas that strengthen my overall practice. I also volunteer regularly with the Conejo Free Clinic and the VCLA Clinic, which gives me a chance to stay connected to the community and sharpen my skills in real-time. Additionally, I make it a priority to keep up with the latest case law and legal developments so I can provide my clients with informed, up-to-date guidance.
What is your favorite quote or piece of advice that inspires you?
“Fight for the things that you care about but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.” - Ruth Bader Ginsburg
How has the Women Lawyers of Ventura County community supported you in your legal career?
The Women Lawyers of Ventura County community has been incredibly supportive. All of the WLVC current and past board members are truly amazing—they’ve been role models, mentors, and friends. We’re working hard to do meaningful things in our legal community—but we also believe in having fun along the way. Life’s too short to only focus on work, and WLVC is a space where we can connect, support one another, and enjoy the journey together.
